Ukrainian fiction and nonfiction filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa has intimately explored former Soviet Europe in numerous films, gaining an extraordinary level of recognition and acclaim at festivals from Cannes and Venice to Toronto and Cairo.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, Loznitsa’s statements opposing the boycott of Russian films turned him into a polarizing figure and he was expelled from the Ukrainian Film Academy.

Is there a place for cultural boycotts today, or are they a form of censorship and a corruption of the democratic values they purport to uphold?
